my one word

New Year’s Resolutions tend to focus on some bad habit that needs to be broken. Each year we notice all the ways we fell short the year before and we promise ourselves that we’ll be better. However, this response to the past never seems to lead us in to a different future. Those brand new athletic shoes find their rightful place deep inside the closet. The kids want to go to the park, but there’s a football game you just can’t miss or a deadline at the office you have to meet. The busy pace of life gets the better of us, and before we know it, the year is over with little to no personal growth having occurred in our lives.

A NEW KIND OF RESOLUTION:

“My One Word” is an experiment designed to move beyond the past and look ahead. Most of our failed resolutions tend to focus on the type of person we want to become based on the person we’ve been. God’s promise to us is that we will become His people. So what if our hopes for the year centered on who God wanted us to become instead?

Many people do not see God at work in their lives simply because they don’t know what to look for. Our long list of resolutions only get in the way of our figuring out who it is God wants us to be. So the challenge of this experiment is simple; lose the long the list of changes you want to make this year–and instead pick ONE WORD.

Choosing one word helps to provide clarity by taking all of your big plans for life change and narrowing them down into a single thing. This little exercise forces clarity and helps us plot a course for growth. It helps us to focus on our character and vision for our future instead of getting locked up in our circumstances and regrets from our past.

Your word will simply provide you with one thing to focus on without being overwhelmed by the hundreds of New Year’s Resolutions that could be on your list. So, we invite you to join with us and pick a word.
